Beautiful image of Brother holding Doodle.
In class we read a, quite morbid, short story called "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst. This story starts off with a boy who goes by the name "Brother" or is also considered unnamed. Brother had been wanting a sibling to play with and when he was at the age of six he finally received what he wanted, a brother! Although, there was a bit of a problem, his brother was born a cripple. Everyone thought it was the end for this child, they even had a coffin boult for the limp newborn. One person did have faith, that person was Brother. As time went one The boy was still alive so they decided to name him, he was given the name William Armstrong. Brother strongly disagreed that this is the right name for him, since William was such a fragile and weak boy. As more time wen one William began to crawl. Brother noticed that when doodle crawled along he look kind of like a doodlebug, therefore he nicknames his brother Doodle. By naming him, I think that this is showing a strong bonding between Brother and Doodle. You may observe that her is naming him after a clumsy bug and that this is more like a negative situation but you got to go to real life situations. For example, I call my mom "mona" which means monkey in Spanish. Do I actually thing that she acts or is a monkey? No! So the same would be for Doodle and Brother.
Doodle shows a couple signs here and there that he is a normal child from the crawling to a simple smile. Brother believes in his so much that he devises a plan to get Doodle to walk. You see that word? BELIEVES! If he has so much hate for his brother, he wouldn't have even cared if he lived or died. Yet Brother does mention something else. He said that he is embarrassed of Doodle not being able to walk like any other boy. Brother also does these lessons out of embarrassment So the lessons begin. Brother take Doodle to the most beautiful place he knows, Old Lady Swamp. Once again he shows a sign that he loves Doodle because you wouldn't take someone you despise to a place you adore. She slowing leans to walk with a bit of support from Brother. One day the boys go to the kitchen and have Mom, Dad, and Aunt Niece close their eyes. Once they turn around they see their crippled child walking! They celebrate, until the author adds something very strange into the story. Brother's foot gets steeped on by Aunt Niece. Why would Hurst add this in? Why did he want the celebration to end so abruptly? Is this foreshadowing something?
Later on, everyone is outside in they spot a scarlet ibis in the tree above them. All of a sudden the scarlet ibis falls to the floor and dies. Doodle notes how sad it is that this bird traveled and got so far just to fall and die. This might also b foreshadowing an important event in to future. Doodle and Brother want to burry the limp creature, so the go to Old lady Swamp. Once the arrived storm clouds begin to coved the sky. The rain is coming down and the boys are walking as fast as they can. Weak Doodle begins to show sings that something is wrong with his body. brother starts walking faster and Doodle starts walking faster. Brother stars running and Doodle starts running as well. When I first heard this is was terrified, yet I think Brother did this out of determination. He wanted to see he brother exceed to he tested his limits. Once Doodle was out of sight Brother stopped running. After calling his make a few times he went back only to find his brother packed into a tight ball, dead.
